The city has decided the best course of action is to leave a dead moose carcass in a stormwater pond near Ray Gibbons Dr. SUPPLIED/Craig Sims

A moose carcass in a storm water pond in the Riel neighbourhood has been left by the city to decompose.

The moose was hit by a vehicle and is believed to have wandered to the pond to die after it was injured, Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES) said in an email.

Several passers-by reported the moose to FWES back in September.

The responsibility for removing roadkill lies with highway maintenance contractors or municipalities, according to FWES.

Fish and wildlife officers informed the St. Albert’s Public Works department of the moose carcass.

“The city discussed the location of the deceased moose with Alberta Fish and Wildlife and have determined the best course of action is to leave the remains to decompose naturally,” said Pamela Osborne, communications advisor for the city’s Public Works department.
