Servus Place is celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend and is inviting the community to the party.

The City of St. Albert’s Servus Credit Union Place opened the doors on Sept. 30 2006 and the focus was on becoming the community’s premier recreation destination.

“A community gathering space was envisioned where people of all ages and abilities could come together to pursue healthy living,” said Danielle MacDougall, communications adviser for the city.

To celebrate, the facility is hosting a day of activities for citizens of all ages. Between noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday partygoers will be able to get their faces painted, get photos taken in a photo booth or get a portrait done by a caricature artist. Bubble soccer, laser tag, fitness testing and public skating will also be organized for the public to participate in.

During the ten years in the community, Servus Place has hosted countless musical acts such as Loverboy, Dallas Smith and Gord Bamford. Comedic acts Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood of the series Whose Line Is It Anyways? have also entertained the community on the facility’s stage.

The location has been an attraction for sporting events over the years, bringing in the Special Olympic Alberta Summer Games, Mark Messier Day, along with Wayne Gretzky and his travelling hockey school.

Servus Place is home to three NHL sized arenas, two field houses, three gymnasium courts, a water play centre, a four-lane track and a children’s play zone.

There is currently a plan to add another ice surface to the complex, bring the total to four.

Deputy Mayor Cathy Heron and Interim City Manager Chris Jardine will kick off the ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a cake cutting and the celebration will follow from noon to 4 p.m.

Membership or admission is required to participate in the festivities.
