Champion is Alberta’s Exporter of the Year

Champion Petfoods was named Alberta Exporter of the year earlier this month.

The Alberta Export Awards pay tribute to the success and innovative approaches of Alberta export companies and celebrate their contributions to both the provincial and national economy.

During a gala luncheon in Edmonton on Dec. 8, the Morinville-based pet food manufacturer received both the prestigious Alberta Exporter of the Year award and the Consumer Products Award.

“We are truly honoured to be named Alberta’s Exporter of the Year,’’ said Frank Burdzy, president and CEO, Champion Petfoods, in a release. “It is exciting to be recognized for our excellence in export. This is a testament to our team’s commitment to innovation and furthering our vision to be trusted by pet lovers everywhere.”

The Consumer Products Award recognizes an Alberta company that specializes in and exports high-end products for direct-to-consumer or retail markets and have significant Canadian content.

Champion uses fresh regional ingredients with no preservatives and makes their product in their own kitchens.

Champion products are available in 80 countries worldwide.

Panda Express now open

Panda Express celebrated its grand opening in Erin Ridge last week.

Panda Express offers American Chinese cuisine in a family-owned, friendly atmosphere. The St. Albert restaurant marks the ninth Panda Express in Canada and the second in Alberta.

“This new restaurant is very exciting for us at Panda Express, as we’re thrilled to continue our Canadian expansion and show how fortunate we are to be in this great area,” said Biejia He, area coach of operations for Panda Express, in a press release Dec. 21.

The chain gives back through its Panda Cares program and has already donated 20 per cent of grand opening day proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club Edmonton.

New service for seniors

A new business is providing a much needed-service to the residents of St. Albert and the Edmonton region.

Good Neighbour Rides is an accompaniment and transportation service for seniors and people with disabilities. Unlike a taxi service drivers stay with clients from the time of pick up until the time they are brought home.

The company will provide services for everything from medical testing and outpatient procedures to religious services to grocery shopping. They will also do airport drop offs, with assistance checking in, and pick ups.

Drivers can assist clients getting in and out of the vehicle and will store collapsible walkers or wheelchairs in the trunk.

All drivers possess a class 4 driver’s license, clean driving record, criminal record check and CPR and First Aid certificate. They are also covered by commercial auto insurance.
