Building ditches 'old' label

A renowned architect responsible for some of St. Albert’s most notable buildings will have one of his creations named after him.

A renowned architect responsible for some of St. Albert’s most notable buildings will have one of his creations named after him.

The former RCMP detachment quarters on Sir Winston Churchill Avenue will soon bear the name of Peter Hemingway, the British-born architect who designed the structure. The building will be renamed the Hemingway Centre, as per council direction.

Coun. Carol Watamaniuk suggested the change as part of an effort to ensure proper recognition is given to city landmarks.

“I feel very strongly about not only the historical designation of buildings such as St. Albert Place, but also the naming of roads and trails in St. Albert after architects or someone who was outstanding within the community,” Watamaniuk said.

Mayor Nolan Crouse contacted the Hemingway family about the name change and said they are excited and honoured with the idea.

“I sent them all separate emails, and they are all thrilled with it,” he said. “We just haven’t been able to get the family down here for the commemoration ceremony.”

Crouse said a ceremony, an official unveiling of the name is still being organized. In the meantime, administration has been asked to come up with a naming policy for other city landmarks.
