A St. Albert daycare will be closed today in protest of a deal between the province and the federal government that has mandated daycare facilities receiving federal affordability grant money to reduce their fees to $10 a day.

Emelia's Child Development Centre, located at #202 100 Centre Street, will be closed today.

Daycares around the province are participating in the rolling closures, which are being led by the Association of Alberta Childcare Entrepreneurs (AACE).

“The decision for the rolling closures stems from the critical need to address the significant underfunding and inflexibility of the $10/day childcare program,” according to a press release from the AACE.

“This program, in its current state, places an unsustainable strain on the childcare industry's ability to serve Alberta families effectively. The closures symbolize a stand against policies that risk creating divides among children and potentially harming their social and emotional development.
