A severe thunderstorm capable of producing destructive wind gusts is moving through the St. Albert area, prompting a warning from Environment Canada Thursday evening.

The alert, issued at 7:24 p.m., includes St. Albert, Edmonton, and several nearby municipalities. Meteorologists are tracking what they describe as a very dangerous thunderstorm, and residents are being urged to take immediate precautions.

Environment Canada is advising residents in affected areas to exercise extra care, noting that strong winds may cause property damage, downed trees or power lines, and hazardous travel conditions. The warning also extends to Sherwood Park and other parts of Leduc, Strathcona, Wetaskiwin, Beaver, and Camrose counties.

People are encouraged to seek shelter indoors, avoid driving if possible, and monitor weather.gc.ca for updates as the storm progresses.
