There’s a dynamic blend of top talent and a fabulous assortment of hit shows tagged to perform on Morinville Community Cultural Centre’s 2019 stage and the best of the season is yet to come.
By my count there are still two family shows and four mainstage performances that will shine a light in our dark, gloomy winter months.
Starting off on Saturday, Jan. 26, with his one-of-a-kind musical wackiness is Al Simmons, a children’s entertainer dubbed “a wizard of one-liners and a lightning bolt of lunacy.”
In February 2017, a fire tore through his prop trailer destroying many of his unique homemade props. The “magic workshop” has been rebuilt and it will be fun to see what Simmons has cobbled together from cans, straws, hoses, turkey basters, door stoppers and whatever else he found around the house.
A second family show, this one mystifying and mesmerizing, is Outerbridge – Magical Odyssey on Sunday, Feb. 23. Ted and Marion Outerbridge transport you to a Victorian parlour of mysteries to experience the Golden Age of Magic. Stories from their world-travelling adventures are woven into this universe of enchantment and grand illusion.
Mainstage series
There’s no better show to launch the mainstage series than Chase Padgett’s Nashville Hurricane on Friday, Feb. 1. This odd tale of fingerpickin’ fury starts when a vanished acoustic guitar prodigy appears out of nowhere.A one-man show, Pagett plays all the roles as manager, mother, mentor and Henry Waltrip the guitar prodigy who speaks of the dark world of showbiz and tells a woeful tale of his ascent and descent.
The foot-stomping, hand-clapping sounds of Còig, one of Atlantic Canada’s premiere traditional ensembles, comes together as an unparalleled musical force on Friday, March 22. Since the foursome released a new album, Rove, in 2017, they’ve been pumped to share it with fellow Canadians.
Closing the season is another musical favourite ABRA CADABRA, a Vancouver-based group that performs the timeless and uplifting music of ABBA. On Friday, April 5, they will recreate the Swedish super group’s music with powerhouse vocals, music, costumes and lots of personal stories.
