St. Albert’s own Cyra Paddon, 12, is the latest in a long line of local vocalists to win a singing competition at Big Valley Jamboree.
Cyra (pronounced Kira), who will enter Grade 7 at Victoria School of Performing Arts in the fall, was awarded the top prize at the country festival’s Homegrown Talent Stage Junior Category for under 13 competitors.
She recapped the final showcase on Aug. 5 saying that once the three finalists sang their charts, a drum roll sounded.
“Then they called my name. I was awestruck. What, me? I won. I was so excited and shocked,” Cyra said.
Ironically, even though this was a country festival, the young singer showcased her vocals with two pop songs: The Jackson 5’s Who's Lovin’ You and Cher’s You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me from the movie Burlesque.
“I don’t want to offend anyone but country is my least favourite music. But I really liked the people I met and was with. I chose pop because it is my favourite style and it is more suited to my voice.”
One contestant described the young songstress as a “mini Whitney Houston,” while Cyra believes her singing style is closer to that of Jennifer Hudson.
Cyra fell into singing in Grade 4 and realized she really loved it. A few months ago, Cyra’s network of contacts introduced her to Anna Beaumont, an Edmonton-based accomplished jazz and pop singer. As a teacher and facilitator, Beaumont focuses on how best to help students express their "authentic voice."
As the gold-plated recipient in her category, Cyra received multiple prizes. In the goodie bag, ATB Financial wrote a $100 cheque for her and one for her mother. She also received a microphone and microphone stand as well as a one-year Alberta Country Music Association membership.
Perhaps the most cherished prize is a two-hour rental for a standard recording at Sound Alive Studios in Sherwood Park.
“This makes me want to start writing my own songs. I already have a few ideas.”
One is whimsical – Cyra’s love for the family cat. The other idea grew from a splintered relationship with her father.
After BVJ's successful performance, her confidence has spiked. Nothing is standing in the way of this up-and-coming tween sensation. Although pop is Cyra's forte, next on the to-do list is an audition at Crazy for You, Victoria School’s next musical.
“I feel really excited. I feel ready to take on more competitions and musicals and prove I can do it.”
