3rd annual Porkapalooza

If you’re stumped about what to get the man in your life for Father’s Day, look no further.

Porkapalooza BBQ Festival 2016 is a he-man style event with food trucks serving generous size barbecue portions, a dog-eat-dog barbecue competition, food demos and beer gardens running June 18 and 19 at Edmonton’s Clarke Park.

On the food stage there’s a variety of area chefs sharing their secrets from Nelvin Reyes of Pampas Brazilian Steakhouse grilling beef ribs for mini sandwiches, Brian Misko perfecting the perfect pork burger and Victor Hugo Raya from La Mar Land & Sea turning out Mexican pork chorizo and quesadillas.

St. Albert raised chef Lindsay Porter, a gold medal winner of the 2015 Canadian Food Championships, also delivers her take on cooking a succulent pork dish.

Saturday and Sunday also feature daytime entertainment and evening concerts from a wide spectrum of artists.

The evening concerts take over Clarke Stadium with Loverboy, Gord Bamford, Prism, Headpins, The Washboard Union and Hey Romeo to name a few.

And you can’t beat the price of admission. It’s free for the weekend.

Although concerts are free, donations for the Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund will be accepted. For more info see porkapalooza.ca.

Africa Day Gala

Are you a passionate foodie who enjoys tasting a variety of different ethnic foods. If so, drop by the Africa Day Gala held at the Shaw Conference Centre on Saturday, June 18 for an authentic succulent feast.

It’s a day to celebrate the many cultures, customs and culinary offerings of a continent filled with an incredible heritage.

An award winning team led by executive chef Simon Smotkowicz, twice named Canada’s Chef of the Year, is preparing a diverse menu of traditional foods influenced over the centuries from traders, invaders and migrants.

The entrées include servings of Ethiopian chicken, goat tomato stew and grilled spicy tilapia. Since the cuisine of Africa relies heavily on starches and spices, jollof rice, Ethiopian cabbage, potatoes and carrots as well as plantains (the basis of many African meals) are on the carte du jour.

The gala starts at 6 p.m. at the conference centre, 9797 Jasper Ave. Tickets are $50 at the door.
