Canning is going through a resurgence in popularity, and Sturgeon County is taking advantage of the booming food preservation trend to offer two timely workshops.

Jam canning is on Aug. 25 at Morinville Community Cultural Centre from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes a light supper, course and resource material as well as a take-home jar of jam. Limited spots. Please RSVP by Aug. 18.

Later on Sept. 21, a pickle canning workshop is offered at the cultural centre from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Course cost is $20 and includes a light supper, course material and a take-home jar of pickles. RSVP is required by Sept. 14.

To celebrate Alberta Open Farm Days, a weekend event whereby farms and ranches across the province open their gates to the public, Prairie Gardens is hosting a long table dinner on Aug. 21.

Chef Jamin Sharp of Solstice Restaurant and his crew will descend on the adventure farm to prepare an exclusive five-course gourmet dinner that showcases Prairie Garden’s field-to-fork produce.

Lamb, baby corn and potatoes, heirloom tomatoes, root crops and all kinds of greens are on the menu.

Guests are also invited for an herb garden tour where they will participate in making an herb and smoked salt rub they can take home in a pottery vessel made by a local potter.
