Performing arts classes coming soon

Due to popular demand and the hard facts from a survey, St. Albert Children’s Theatre is offering three adult workshop classes from the fall to next spring. “We’re opening it up to the community, the 15-plus and adult crowd.

Due to popular demand and the hard facts from a survey, St. Albert Children’s Theatre is offering three adult workshop classes from the fall to next spring.

“We’re opening it up to the community, the 15-plus and adult crowd. We’ve been challenged to look at the entire performing arts package in our area. We’ve been focusing on musical theatre, but performance arts is much greater,” said SACT artistic director Janice Flower.

• Filmmakers Justin Brunelle and Carlee Ryski, graduates of Red Deer College’s Motion Picture Arts Program, will lead Lights, Camera, Action!.

This two-day, hands-on workshop focuses on behind-the-scenes operations.

“The first day in the morning they’ll learn the basic lingo and understand the different positions. In the afternoon, they’ll cover the technical aspects, and they’ll be broken into groups, given two-page scripts and told to shoot,” Flower said.

“On day two, they will finish filming and learn about editing. They’ll also be given examples on how things could have been done differently.”

The weekend workshop runs Oct. 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Little White Schoolhouse. Fee is $300.

• St. Albert Children’s Theatre in-house make-up designer, Noreen Jani, brings out her pots and brushes for Stage Makeup: The Character’s Face and Special Effects.

The three-hour workshop is designed to cover the creation and application of stage makeup for different roles. Jani will discuss every aspect from hygiene health to the final brushstroke.

As part of the workshop, students will learn the tricks of highlights and shadows as well as using prosthetics to alter a character.

As a point of reference, Jani will assist students create characters for SACT’s upcoming November productions of A Seussified Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker Sings!.

“We hope students will come on board the production and be part of the running crew. It’s a way for them to get actual experience,” said co-director Jackie Pooke.

The workshop takes place in the Arden Theatre dressing rooms Saturday, Nov. 19 from noon to 6 p.m. The fee is $150.

• Next spring Morinville-raised, Edmonton-based playwright-author Marty Chan will teach students how to craft a script. Over a four-week period, he will reveal simple and easy-to-apply tips on writing for theatre.

Students will meet at St. Albert Place four Tuesdays from May 2 to 23 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Fee $200.
