Every year, the Musée Héritage Museum encourages city youths to take their best shots with a photo contest it aptly calls Take Your Best Shot.
The program has now returned for its eighth incarnation and the theme this time around is My St. Albert. Museum curator Joanne White is already expecting to receive a fine variety of photographs featuring the grain elevators.
“We probably will, although because we switched up the time of year that we’re doing it, one of the things about that is that we are getting different images than we did when it was always in the fall,” she said.
Back in 2011, the first theme, My Favourite Place in St. Albert, revolved around the 150th anniversary of the city. Last year, it revolved around the 150th anniversary of the country.
“We’ve sort of come around again. Because we did My Canada last year, we thought it would be nice to bring it back home. It’s been awhile since we specifically focused on St. Albert.”
The contest will accept entries until Mon., April 30.
Entrants will be divided into three age groups: students in grades 3 to 6, grades 7 to 9, and grades 10 to 12. Each photographer must submit a photograph of what St. Albert means to them as well as a written statement as to why they chose their subjects.
A jury will choose three winners from each category based on the choice of subject, photographic creativity, the quality of the photo, and the written description. Winners will be notified by May 16 with prize gift certificates from McBain Camera on the line.
Younger photographers in Grade 2 or under also have a chance to get in on the action. A special display will be set up in the museum’s Discovery Room. Photographers (or their parents) can submit their photos for this special display to [email protected] or fill out the online entry form on the website. The submission deadline is the same.
