Throughout his remarkable career as a singer-songwriter, Johnny Cash built an incredible catalogue of songs sung by both his peers and admirers.

Feb. 26 is The Man in Black’s birthday and country recording artists Dirt Road Angels released their take on Folsom Prison Blues. The track is the fourth single from their Extra Dirty album released in March 2018.

Folsom Prison Blues' popularity stemmed from Cash cleverly combining elements from two popular folk styles, the train song and the prison song.

“We slowed it down, but added a solo and a scat,” said Dahlia Wakefield who is joined on vocals by Danita Lynn, Karen Claypool and Shila Marie.

Guitarist Alan Tymofichuck, bass player Derek Oja and drummer Scott Ebner add that extra layer of musicality.

Wakefield explained that prior to their recording with producer Rob Hewes at Titan Sound, the foursome had performed it for numerous crowds.

“Karen showed us this cool Andrews Sisters type arrangement. We decided to do it live and the crowd reaction was great.”

But it wasn’t just the cool arrangement that juiced up the vocalists’ enthusiasm.

“We all grew up on Johnny Cash. He’s been a big influence on our musical lives and our parents’ musical lives.”

Come Friday, March 1, the foursome will gather at LB’s Pub in St. Albert to sing this iconic song in addition to a few other country, pop and classic rock tunes.

One of their pop favourites is Christina Aguilera’s Grammy nominated Candyman.

“I love the challenge of singing Christina Aguilera’s songs. It keeps us on our toes. She has a huge range and she basically does vocal acrobatics that not a lot of other people can do. We can do it, and we put our spin on it.”

In honour of Cash’s birthday, the angels also plan to feature country artist Gretchen Wilson’s Here For the Party and Miranda Lambert’s White Liar.

“Both are big inspirations in a male-dominated industry.”

When the Friday concert rolls around, DRA encourages loyal fans to stop by for a song or two and they also hope to meet new supporters.

“Don’t sit on the fence. It’s Johnny Cash’s birthday. It’s our single release. It’s been a while since we’ve played at LB’s and every time we do, it’s so special. And where else do you see four hot women on stage,” laughs Wakefield at a tongue-in-cheek moment.

“Mostly we hope people will come out and enjoy our singles as much as we do.”

LB’s Pub is at 23 Akins Dr. Showtime is 9 p.m. Cover charge is $6.
