Chatter: St. Albert Chamber Music Society and Provincial Music Festival

Hot off the press St. Albert Chamber Music Society just issued its lineup for the 2018-2019 season. The ninth season kicks off Sept. 15 with the newly formed Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton led by artistic director Lidia Khaner.

St. Albert Chamber Music Society just issued its lineup for the 2018-2019 season.

The ninth season kicks off Sept. 15 with the newly formed Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton led by artistic director Lidia Khaner. The orchestra’s 16 top-tier musicians include Robert Uchida, Anna Kozak, Clayton Leung and Raphael Hoekman.

Following on Nov. 17 is the European sound of the Penny Sanborn Trio featuring Sanborn on classical accordion, Jamie Philip on guitar and Rubim de Toledo on bass.

Starting in the new year on Feb. 9, 2019 is mezzo-soprano Lesley Dolman. She is a recent grad of the MA Opera Performance Program at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is currently based out of Cardiff, Wales.

The Vaughn String Quartet returns by popular demand on March 16 and the season’s closer on May 4 is Top Notes Flute Quartet.

Single tickets are $30 to $35 and subscriptions are $120 to $140. Tickets are available at the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Musée Heritage Museum.

Provincial Music Festival

St. Albert Rotary Music Festival entrants earned seven key awards at the Provincial Music Festival.

The top performer, Alicia Krips in the brass/woodwind category for 16 and under, scored gold. Two choral groups, Vocal Collective and Memorial Composite High School Mixed Chorus also came in first.

In addition there were four second place recipients: Gabriel Lappa for musical theatre, Sofiya Chvojka (Girls 12 and under), Cantilon Children’s Choir and École Meridian Heights Magic Voices.
