A dark Irish comedy

Shadow Theatre’s latest production, Fly Me to the Moon, is a wonderful showcase for the talents of two fine female actors – Annette Loiselle and Elinor Holt.

Written by Marie Jones (Stones in His Pockets) and directed by John Hudson, the play examines poverty and how society treats the elderly.

Francis, a Protestant, and Loretta, a Catholic, are community care workers. Their charge, 84-year-old Davy, loves to bet on the horses. One the day the stroke victim makes his one and only big win, and pops off while sitting on the toilet.

When the cash-strapped women, whose husbands were both laid off work, realize Davy has died, they’re fixed with a perplexing problem. The old man had no kin, so why not cash his pension and the winning ticket and keep the much-needed funds.

Fly Me to the Moon runs April 25 to May 13 at Varscona Theatre. Tickets range from $27 to $37 and Tuesdays 2 For 1 Night. Call 780-434-5564.

Elvis at Mayfield Theatre

Directed by Kate Ryan, All Shook Up is the Mayfield Dinner Theatre’s latest showcase of the jukebox songs Elvis Presley made famous. The musical revue is a tale of a small town girl with big dreams until she falls for a motorcycle-riding stud.

Set in small town conservative middle America, a surprise visit from a leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger turns ideals and values upside down. Laugh at mistaken identities, sigh at the love triangles and revel in the power of rock ‘n roll – specifically 20 Elvis hits.

The show brings together a large acting pool that includes Jenni Burke, Adam Charles, Kendra Connor, Jason Hardwick, Melissa Macpherson and St. Albert’s Gabriel Gagnon.

All Shook Up runs until June 10 at Mayfield Dinner Theatre. For ticket information visit www.mayfieldtheatre.ca
