Lieutenant-governor welcomes public

Lt.-Gov. Lois Mitchell will continue to follow the long-established tradition of greeting the public at Government House.

The annual New Year’s Day levee takes place at the historic building on Tuesday, Jan. 1, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The levee dates back to the 1600s. It is based on an older European tradition that saw subjects visiting the monarch where they paid their respects and pledged allegiance.

Today the family friendly event is an opportunity to meet and have a photo taken with Lt.-Gov. Mitchell, his honour Doug Mitchell, and members of the Vice-Regal Escort made up of officers from the Canadian Forces, RCMP and police officers.

Government House is rarely open to the public, and this is also a chance to see first-hand the interior architecture and magnificent art collections as well as enjoying music and light refreshments.

The event is free of charge and no advance booking is required. Government House is located at 12845 – 102 Ave.

Artist award shortlist

Alberta Music and Alberta Media Production Industries Association just announced a shortlist of nominees for the 2018 Edmonton Music and Film Prizes.

Former Morinville singer-songwriter Celeigh Cardinal was nominated along with trombonist Audrey Ochoa, Latin singer Marco Claveria and the funky Nuela Charles.

Camille Beaudoin, a graduate of École Secondaire Sainte Marguerite d’Youville and co-founder of Mosaic Entertainment, has emerged as a strong contender in the Canadian film industry with her latest full-length rom-com #Roxy.

“Diversity of voice is at the heart of our shared vision for the arts over the next 10 years,” says Sanjay Shahani, executive director of the Edmonton Arts Council. “The scope of film and music created by this year’s shortlisted artists demonstrates the rich well of talent within Edmonton, and the interesting conversations artists inspire.”

Launched in 2012, winners receive $10,000 prizes with an additional two $1,000 for runners-up. Winners will be announced at a reception on Feb. 5, 2019.
