Renaissance Venice comes to the Shaw

If you're in search of different experience this Christmas season, check out the Visionary Entertainment-sponsored Venetian Carnival. The evening of masked fun takes place at the Shaw Conference Centre on Saturday, Dec. 9 with a formal three-course dinner and entertainment with Edmonton's best known comedy and improv actors. They are  Mark Meer, Tom Edwards, Dana Andersen, Davina Stewart, Jeff Halaby, Leona Brausen and Andrea House. Dress up in masked formal wear or lavish Renaissance costumes and ride the motorized gondola while viewing a series of period-appropriate activities. The Venetian Carnival is a fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association. All proceeds remain in Alberta to bring awareness and more rounded services to the region. Shaw Conference Centre doors open at 6 p.m. for carnival entertainment and activities. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m. and dancing at 9 p.m. with six-piece band Belle Aggio. MacEwan University winter concerts

MacEwan University's Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications toasts the season with two shows. The MacEwan Big Bands, under the leadership of Ray Baril, the music department's head of winds/brass, and music instructor Jerrold Dubyk, launch a dynamic fusion of Latin, funk and jazz. The performances, held Monday, Dec. 4, feature ensemble saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section. St. Albert jazz vocalist and the music department's voice section head Chandelle Rimmer, along with Dr. Bill Richards, the piano/theory section head feature the Showcase Bands. Most of the high-energy groups play a wide array of classic and modern funk pieces. This show is on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Both concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Triffo Theatre in Allard Hall, 11110 - 104 Ave. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 seniors and $5 for full-time non-MacEwan University students.
