Album release

Jill Barber, one of the Arden Theatre’s most recognizable vocalists, releases her new studio album on June 22 via Outside Music.

Stepping away from her trademark jazz signature, Metaphora is without a doubt a danceable contemporary pop sound that addresses topics such as empowerment, sexual politics, and the complications of love and depression.

After five weeks on CBC Music's Top 20 Chart, Barber’s first single, Girls Gotta Do, now sits on the top spot. Barber describes the single as “a challenge to the status quo as we usher in a new era of equality.”

Within the next five months, Barber will tour Metaphora across Canada and the United States with a stop at MacEwan University’s Triffo Theatre on Oct. 27.

Tickets are $28 advance, $35 at door. Visit www.yeglive.ca.

Awash in floods

This year there has been massive flooding in British Columbia, New Brunswick, France and India. Even the Saudi Oman desert was unexpectedly flooded with heavy rain.

The Earth is trying to tell us something. But are we listening?

Alberta Floods: Rogue Earth is a documentary that marks the fifth anniversary of the catastrophic super flood that forever marked Calgary, High River and even Medicine Hat.

In June 2013 it made global headlines as people confronted torrential rains, rising floodwaters and mass evacuations.

The documentary, captured on personal devices with never-before-seen raw footage, shows despair, but also moving tales of generosity and selfless acts of bravery.

Alberta Floods: Rogue Earth premieres Sunday, June 17 on Discovery Channel. Check listings for time.
