Exit the King
Studio Theatre's last seasonal play is a translation of Eugene Ionesco's Exit the King.
Exit the King is an absurdist portrait of King Bérenger, a dying ruler. Ionesco's magical realism reveals that when the king is in command, his powers control nature.
However, the court physician gives the king 90 minutes to live. In the King's diminished competence, a sinkhole swallows the nation's university, birthrates decline, and Mars and Jupiter collide.
He is torn on one hand by his first wife Queen Marguerite to face death with dignity and on the other hand by Queen Marie, his second wife to live life. As he weakens, he loses control, and his entourage vanishes.
Exit the King runs at the Timms Centre from May 17 to 26. Tickets are $12 to $25. Call 780-492-2495.
