Snarky Puppy plays Edmonton
The TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival is slowly releasing information about its much anticipated June 22 to July 1 run.This year’s popular headliner is none other than Snarky Puppy, the Brooklyn-based collective that “makes music for the brain and booty.”
At its core, this three-time Grammy Award-winning collective represents a convergence of both black and white American music with various accents from around the world.
Japan, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico are all represented in the group’s membership that operates with as many as 25 musicians in rotation.
Snarky Puppy plays at the Winspear Centre on Monday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $39 to $49 plus service charges. Call 780-428-1414 or visit www.winspearcentre.com.
Major jazz at MacEwan
MacEwan Music Month starts its month of concerts tonight with the A Cappella Ensemble directed by John McMillan and Kent Sangster’s Jazz Combo.For the uninitiated, Sangster is not only an instructor at MacEwan University, he’s also a saxophonist, recording artist and founder of Edmonton International Jazz Festival.
With those kinds of credentials, students are getting world class expertise and this concert mainlines several fundamental jazz instruments: drums, bass, guitar, voice and trumpet.

Best baroque concert
St. Albert musicians, cellist Ronda Metzies and violinist Neda Yamach, once again join Alberta Baroque Ensemble for the group's fifth concert of the season on Sunday, March 4.The recital, Concertos for Oboe and Trumpet, features special guest ESO principal oboe Lidia Khaner, principal trumpet Robin Doyon and oboist Kara Loewer.
The ensemble brings together works by Vivaldi, Torelli, Fasch, Corelli and Geminiani.
The recital is a 3 p.m. in Robertson-Wesley United Church. Tickets are $15 to $30 at the door or through Tix on the Square.
