Alberta Country Music Awards

The 7th annual Alberta Country Music Awards are about to take off this weekend on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Sheraton Red Deer Hotel.

Hosted by St. Albert’s own Jackie Rae Greening and Emerson Drive frontman Brad Mates, it’s a gathering of country artists to mix, mingle and share music on a variety of platforms.

Five artists from St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County are up for awards. Singer-songwriter Dan Davidson, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise this past year, is leading the pack with five awards.

They include Male Artist of the Year, Fan Choice, Video of the Year and Song of the Year (Barn Burner, a co-write with Clayton Bellamy). Two of his songs Barn Burner and Say We Did are both nominated for Single of the Year.

St. Albert’s Hailey Benedict is up for Fan Choice and Horizon Youth Award while Justin Hogg of Morinville is nominated for Song of Year, Smoke, a co-write with Lynn Tessari.

Bill Borgwardt was once more given the nod for Industry Person of the Year while former St. Albert resident Aaron Goodvin, now a Nashville singer-songwriter, is up for Entertainer of the Year.

Sparks fly, magic happens

M. Firechild once noted that love is an illusion, the perfect magic trick controlling our heart. If you agree, check out magician Sheldon Casavant’s sleight of hand illusions in a pre-Valentine performance.

Not only will Casavant perform intriguing illusions making items vanish and inanimate objects come to life. He also plans to introduce a few historical facts about the legendary magician Harry Houdini.

The magic show is on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Fort Edmonton’s Capitol Theatre. Tickets are $29. Visit https://www.fortedmontonpark.ca/all-events/sparks-fly-magic-happens/
