At the Citadel

Singer Alison MacDonald salutes some of the most intriguing songstresses who have sung at the venerable Carnegie Hall stage.

As part of Legends of Carnegie Hall, the Citadel Theatre’s Beyond the Stage performance series, she invokes hit songs from some of the greats: Patsy Cline, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, Carole King and Ella Fitzgerald.

This all-woman show runs Nov. 16 and 18. As an added thrill, Rachel Bowron, St. Albert Children’s Theatre music director, joins MacDonald on Friday and Sunday night while former Morinville singer-songwriter Celeigh Cardinal drops by for the Saturday performance.

Tickets are $30 plus fees. Call 780-425-1820 or visit www.citadeltheatre.com.

Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys are back with their biggest arena tour in 18 years following the release of a new album, DNA, out on Jan. 25, 2019.

DNA brings together the strongest elements of each member of the boy band.

“That’s what I love about this album,” says Kevin Richardson, in a media release. Richardson initially left the band in 2006, but returned in 2012.

“We were able to bring all of our influences and styles into one coherent piece of work. These songs are a great representation of who we are as individuals and as a group.

Beginning May 11, 2019, the group will set off on the DNA World Tour performing across Europe and North America over the course of three months. They’ll be hitting Rogers Place on July 25 just in time for the summer festival season.

Theatre Yes

Big rig oil is a huge part of the Alberta economy, yet you can count the theatre stories about it on one hand. The oilpatch is a subject that needs exploring on all fronts and that’s what Theatre Yes’ Viscosity is doing.

Part exhibition, part journalism, part performance, Viscosity gives life to the stories of Alberta oil workers across various ages, genders, sexualities, cultures and perspectives.

Most importantly, it challenges stereotypical thinking and brings the conversation back to the oilpatch.

Viscosity stars Jimmy Buena, Chris Bullough, Leo Campos Aldunez, Murray Farnell, Byron Martin, Melissa Thingelstad and Sandy Paddick, a speech pathologist working for Sturgeon School Division.

Viscosity runs at the Backstage Theatre, 10330 – 84 Ave, until Nov. 17. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
