Some of the world’s best music is inspired from our loved ones. Iris DeMent’s, The Trackless Woods, was motivated by her Russian-born adopted daughter.

Just by chance, DeMent discovered Russian poet Anna Akhmatova’s, Like a White Stone, and was transfixed by its words. The melodies started pouring out of her to later become The Trackless Woods.

It is the Grammy nominee’s sixth studio album and unlike anything she has ever recorded previously. More importantly, it became a link to connect with her daughter.

DeMent will perform a series of her songs from various albums on Friday, Feb. 16 at the Arden Theatre. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at 780-459-1542 at http://www.ticketmaster.ca

Concrete Theatre

Confusing sexual encounters are big news. Coincidentally Concrete Theatre opens Consent, a youth targeted production about a young couple that must grapple with the emotional aftermath of a sexual encounter gone wrong.

A discussion will follow to talk about consent and what it means to both parties. The educational show also helps students learn about individual rights, gender equality, personal conduct and respect.

Consent will tour across Alberta schools with public performances at La Cité Francophone on Feb. 15 and 17. Appropriate age is 13 and older. Visit www.concretetheatre.ca for more information.
