World premiere of Slumberland Motel
Alberta's Collin Doyle, winner of Alberta Playwright's Network 2006 Outstanding New Alberta Play, finally gets to see the world premiere of Slumberland Motel after 11 years."It's been a long journey with this play. I read an early draft, but I wasn't crazy, crazy about it," said Shadow Theatre artistic director John Hudson. "But Collin has done a lot of work on it and when I read it again, it killed me. It's super funny."
The play takes place overnight in a seedy roadside motel where two down and out vacuum cleaner salesmen, Ed and Edward, share a room on Christmas Eve.
"Ed feels his children are strangers. He is consumed by the idea his wife is leaving him and he's desperate to get home. Edward has had several failed marriages. His personality is outgoing, but underneath he's a lonely man," Hudson said.
Through the hotel room's connecting door, they meet Molly, a mysterious character that comes to represent hope for their future.
"There's a sense of joy and wonder within our lives. At times, life is a grind, but there's always an opportunity to light the spark and find joy in the unexpected."
Slumberland Motel runs at Varscona Theatre from Jan. 17 to Feb. 4 featuring Julien Arnold, Aimée Beaudoin and Reed McColm.
