Jann Arden sells out

Acclaimed Canadian icon Jann Arden announces she will head up a country-wide tour in the fall for her new album titled These Are The Days.

The Calgary-born singer-songwriter is slated to perform at the Arden Theatre on Oct. 25. An announcement was released July 3 stating public tickets would go on sale July 6 at 10 a.m.

A pre-sale for multi-buyers and Jann Arden’s fan club was also slated for July 4. By days end, the bulk of tickets were snapped up with only a few tickets remaining for the general public.

There are rumours negotiations may be underway for a second show. Stay tuned for future updates.

Walterdale explores bipolar disorder

It’s trendy to explore mental illness and Walterdale Theatre is closing its season with the rock musical Next to Normal, winner of three 2009 Tony Awards.

In this showpiece, Dad’s a professional and Diana, a regular suburban housewife, rushes around packing lunches for a daughter and son, two wise-cracking teenagers.

They look like a normal North American family. But looks are deceiving. Diana has battled bipolar disorder and manic depression for more than a decade.

This moving piece of theatre explores the impact of Diana’s illness on her and the family as she struggles through life.

Next to Normal runs until July 14. Tickets range from $18 to $20 plus applicable fees. Call 780-420-1547 or www.ticketmaster.ca.

Political sketch comedy

Folk Lordz, starring Todd Houseman and Ben Gorodetsky, are ramping up their political satire with a screening of a brand new comedy series on July 11 at Garneau Theatre.

In the spring of 2018, the Rapid Fire improvisers released a 15-episode sketch series on YouTube that attracted 100,000 views.

At times dark and hilarious, these two comedic social activists use the Indigenous and immigrant perspective to deliver caustic jabs. Topics on colonialism, environmental destruction and xenophobia are a just a sample of questionable human behaviour they tackle.

The screening starts at 9:30 p.m. with a Q & A to follow. Garneau Theatre is at 8712 – 109 St.
