Pinafore sails into port

Edmonton Opera, the region’s most vibrant companies, opens tonight with Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, at the Jubilee Auditorium.

It’s the voyage of a lifetime as HMS Pinafore cruises into port on Feb. 3, 6, and 9. Director Robert Herriot presents this topsy-turvy spectacle as a splashy 1920s Jazz Age show.

Pinafore is a classic frothy, comedic tale of boy-meets-girl, they fall in love and grumpy dad gets in the way. On the way to a happily-ever-after finale, there's some high-stepping choreography and dance.

Treading the boards is Bridget Ryan, a St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumna. More than a triple threat, the singer, director, playwright and television host is tapped to sing the role of Little Buttercup, a woman with a mysterious secret.

HMS Pinafore starts at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $40. Visit http://www.edmontonopera.com.

Edmonton Music Prize winners

Country singer-songwriter Dan Davidson is the 2017 Edmonton Music Prize winner. The announcement took place at a ceremony held at Metro Cinema on Jan. 30, 2018.

Davidson takes home a prize of $10,000 while runners-up Nuela Charles and 100 Mile House were each awarded $1,000.

Davidson scored a top-charting hit with his song Found, which catapulted him as a #1 charting indie artist in Canada.

He also won four Alberta Country Music Awards in Jan. 2018, and his career is on an upward trajectory opening for Brett Kissel’s We Were That Song 35-city tour.
