2018 Rosie Awards
Last Saturday night, all the movers and shakers in Alberta’s film and television industry filled the Hyatt Regency in Calgary for the 44th annual Rosie Awards Gala.Sponsored by the Alberta Media Production Industries Association, the event honoured actors, directors, designers, writers, tech effects and production crews in 60 categories.
Two companies with connections to St. Albert were honoured. Mosaic Entertainment’s Tiny Plastic Men was recognized as Best Comedy Production or Series. Former local residents Camille Beaudoin and Jesse Lipscombe are producers.
In addition St. Albert’s Kurt Spenrath, along with Edmonton’s Fred Kroetsch and Rebecca Campbell of Open Sky Pictures, received the nod for Best Production Reflecting Cultural Diversity in Last of the Fur Traders.
Cappie nominations
The Cappie nominations for 2017 to 2018 student-produced theatre are in. More than 250 students were nominated in 43 categories that include performance, design, technical effects and backstage production.Below are highlights from Morinville Community High School (MCHS), St. Albert Catholic High and Bellerose Composite High nominated for a total of 30 awards.
Leading the pack with 11 nominations is MCHS for its annual musical production, James and the Giant Peach.
This coming of age tale is up for Best Musical and Best Ensemble in a Musical. Additional on-stage nods go to Jordan Imgrund-Harvey both as Featured Actor in a Musical and Creativity through juggling.
Devon Marsden is recognized as Comic Actor in a Musical; Luke Zacharias as Supporting Actor, and Daphne Charrois as Lead Actress. She is also in contention as a Grade 11 Critic Finalist. MCHS also earned nominations for props, costumes and pit crew.
Coming in at a close second is St. Albert Catholic High School with 10 endorsements for George Orwell’s political-societal drama 1984. The "Big Brother is watching" production is nominated for Best Play, marketing and publicity, sound, lighting, sets and stage management.
Three thespians received recognition. Kelton Libich is up for Feature Actor, Ethan Kidney is nominated for Supporting Actor and Ben Kuchera received a salute for Lead Actor.
Bellerose High flanks the other two schools with nine nominations for Into the Woods. Students were spotlighted for best song, orchestra, costumes, props and design creativity.
Maxwell Kortzman is nominated for Feature Actor in a Musical. Zeliha Yigit and Victor Kuhn are highlighted respectively as Female Vocalist and Male Vocalist while Andrew Part is nominated as Supporting Actor in a Musical.
Winners will be announced at a Cappies Gala on Sunday, June 10 at the Citadel Theatre.
