Edmonton Youth Orchestra
One of the oldest orchestras in the region, the Edmonton Youth Orchestra celebrates its 54th winter season on Sunday, Nov. 27 at the Winspear Centre.
St. Albert conductor Michael Massey, recently inducted into the 2016 Alberta Order of Excellence, will lead the 150 musicians in three masterful works.
The Intermediate Orchestra opens with romantic composer Juan CrisĂłstomo Arriaga’s Symphony in D Major, an expressive work that is both melodic and rhythmic, yet graced with classical smoothness.
The second composition they perform is Georges Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2, a score filled with folk-like themes that achieve a powerful, dramatic quality.
The Senior Band instead tackles Tchaikovsky’s “Manfred” Symphony, a technically challenging work that moves from idealized love to anguish and torment.
The concert starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are adults $15, seniors and students $10. They are available at 780-420-1757 or at tixonthesquare.ca/

Jo-Jo O’ & the Woods and singer-songwriter Trevor Howlett at Arcadia
For a laid-back evening this weekend check out Arcadia Bar.
Jo-Jo O’ & the Woods’ soulful blues along with St. Albert Gazette’s assistant editor Trevor Howlett are prepped for an intimate evening of roots music.
Yes, by day Howlett is a working scribe tied to the computer. But in the evening, the former Cape Breton Island singer-songwriter slings a guitar and taps into our rich musical history.
Almost exactly one year ago on Dec. 4, 2015, he released Venture a Guess, a 12-track reminiscing about love, frustration, panic and glory. Time to help him celebrate a one-year anniversary.
The concert is Saturday, Nov. 26 at 9 p.m. Cover charge is $10. Arcadia is at 10988 – 124 St.
