Broadway’s Tony Award winning smash musical Newsies makes it way to Edmonton for a limited engagement from July 12 to 17 at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

This Disney theatrical production is inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City.

The strike was a youth-led campaign that forced Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst’s newspapers to increase compensation to the child newspaper hawkers, many who were homeless.

This musical production features Joey Barreiro as Jack Kelly, the strike’s driving force, Morgan Keene as the feisty reporter who prints their story and Steve Blanchard as Joseph Pulitzer.

This stage version introduces seven new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman including Letter From the Refuge specifically written for the tour. Many songs from the film score were kept including Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day and King of New York.

Newsies plays Tuesday to Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at 1-855-985-5000 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
