Walterdale Theatre on fire
Human rights and safe working conditions are the centre of Walterdale Theatre’s new and very intense drama. The Triangle Factory Fire Project, running Oct. 10-20, examines the real life Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 that killed 146 workers, mostly young female immigrants.
The script is packed with eyewitness accounts, court transcripts and archival material describing the worst industrial fire in New York City’s history.
Director Barbara Mah likens it to the Bangladesh sweatshop fire in 2012.
“They worked in terrible, unsafe conditions … and the clothes they made were for stores like The Gap, Joe Fresh, Walmart. Stores I shopped at … The clothing may have changed from shirtwaists to hoodies, the sweatshops moved from North America to Bangladesh and China, but the challenges are still happening.”
