There are many important aspects in the world of business in today's society, but the presence of women in businesses today is growing more important every day.
Women today are continuously breaking barriers in the workplace, rising to positions of power, and running their own businesses.
“We have seen an increased representation in leadership roles, access to education and resources, having more supportive networks and mentorship opportunities and societal support,” said local business owner Jodie McFadzen.
With these positive changes for women in business, there has also been great strides from organizations to continue improving life for women in the workplace.
“The St. Albert Chamber of Commerce has such a huge impact on our business community! They support women in business and are there to help navigate challenges that our businesses may have,” said McFadzen.
Women in leadership, and ownership roles have revolutionized certain aspects of business. According to a report from Women’s Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub, the majority of women-run businesses were more proactive in addressing employees’ skills gaps, as 15.6 per cent of all businesses had no plans to do so compared to only 11.7 per cent of majority women-owned businesses.
Even though women have helped improve the way businesses operate, there are still many inequalities, and barriers women have to face.
“Women often navigate biases, whether conscious or unconscious,” said St. Albert Chamber of Commerce chair Angie Hampshire.
“Balancing work and family responsibilities remains a challenge for many, and access to mentorship or funding opportunities can still be more difficult for women entrepreneurs.”
The industry has changed significantly, but there is still room for improvement. According to Women’s Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub, Women entrepreneurs continue to earn less than men entrepreneurs in Canada. In 2022, about 37 per cent of women entrepreneurs, including majority owners of SMEs and self-employed women, earned less than $50,000 annually.
There will continue to be obstacles for women, however, it is more important than ever to continue to overcome any challenges, like so many women already have.
“Every challenge I've faced, I've welcomed it as a learning opportunity,” said Hampshire.
“Whether it's overcoming self-doubt, navigating what once was a very male-dominated industry, or balancing multiple roles.”
Women have become an significant part of the business world, and are a huge part of its continued growth. It’s now more critical than ever for women to continue to contribute in the business world, and uplift each other.
It has the potential to be scary, but women should continue to take chances on themselves.
“Believe in yourself and your abilities,” said Hampshire.
“Surround yourself with people who lift you up and challenge you to grow. Be willing to take risks, ask for help and keep learning. Don't wait for permission – take up space and go after what you want.”
It is important to lean on the other women in business. The past has laid a good foundation, but there's room for growth, and that is the responsibility of everyone.
“Build relationships not just network, but make authentic connections with people in your industry and the business community you are in,” said McFadzen.
“Stay true to your values.”
