"For the staff, it's exhausting. It's challenging when you have somebody come in who is there when there was a simple route to preventing what they came in with — a COVID infection. Our job is to be professional and not to be judgmental, but it's very trying for nurses and doctors and all the other health-care professionals to look at somebody who made a conscious decision not to get vaccinated."

The number of cases in Canada each day grew from about 700 in early August, to almost 3,500 now.

The senator said she receives pleas each day from Afghans, including those who helped Canadian NGOs and are unable to get out. 

The Liberals' Justin Trudeau, the Tories' Erin O'Toole, the Bloc's Yves-François Blanchet, and the NDP's Jagmeet Singh took part, with the three opposition leaders accusing Trudeau of unleashing an election unnecessarily amid rising COVID-19 cases and a crisis in Afghanistan.

Premier Jason Kenney said the province is considering renewed public-health measures.

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland said he doesn't believe most people working in the sector want to switch jobs.

The government credits the turnaround to an ongoing economic recovery from COVID-19, along with a rebound in the energy sector and price restraint by the oil cartel OPEC.

Alberta has been averaging more than 1,000 new cases a day for the last week.
