But critics say the province's current cleanup requirements are based on the industry's past efforts, which are what led to the problem in the first place. The current price spike for oil, now more than $80 a barrel, represents a profit windfall for an industry that should be spending it on cleaning up the province's 97,000 inactive wells. 

"So these nurses have had exposure to COVID patients over the pandemic, and they're well trained and ready to support Alberta through this time."

Amid reports that some staff are being harassed and abused over the program, the province is also doubling the fine to $4,000 for mistreating workers enforcing public-health orders.

"Voters were turned away, were sent to the wrong polling locations, showed up at locations that opened late or never opened, or walked away from massive lineups,” NDP national director Anne McGrath alleged in a letter.
