Where is it legal for men and women to publicly undress and show nudity to four- and five-year-old girls and boys? Well, it is here in St. Albert at the swimming pool facilities!
I am responding and supporting the letter to the editor “Women’s dressing room should be off limits to boys over three years old” (St. Albert Gazette, July 18).
Children from about three-and-one-half years of age have memories. Between three and six years of age, one of the early childhood developmental tasks is Learning Sex Differences and Sexual Modesty behaviours, according to their society (Havignhurst – Developmental Tasks and Education).
Four- and five-year-old children attend school. Would you have your kindergarten-age daughter or son share the same school bathroom and change room?
The recreation facilities provide a Family Room, which has large private change cubicles, and showers, baby change table and playpen.
I ask that management lower the age for girls and boys using the opposite sex pool change rooms and that staff recommend and advertise the Family Change Room at the city pool recreation centres.
