While spending an “exciting” Friday evening in front of the TV, the doorbell rang. Not expecting anyone, my husband and I nervously looked at each other. I gave him the go-ahead to answer the door. Much to our surprise two beautiful little angels were standing on the steps, nicely dressed and donning cheery Santa hats. They asked us if we would like them to sing a Christmas carol to us. We both looked at each other and in unison said “for sure!”
We checked to see if a fundraiser was sponsoring this gesture and happily it wasn’t. Not that I am against fundraisers – they do amazing work for our communities. But there have been so many lately that this time was a welcome surprise.
The girls performed wonderfully and we clapped with appreciation. We again asked if they wanted a donation – perhaps to give to a charity of their choosing. They replied no thanks but we insisted and rightfully rewarded them for their Christmas gift of song.
What a treat my husband and I thought and then we settled down to continue our TV show. Thank goodness for the invention of the pause button! Again, the doorbell rang. Really, we both thought – more? This time there were two younger girls, again nicely dressed, on a bottle drive – raising funds for their dance studio. What talented young citizens we have here in St. Albert. With our hearts still lifted from our previous visitors, we happily handed the little ladies a box of ‘empties’ and again – bid adieu.
After all, isn’t that what Christmas is all about, to renew our spirits, lift our hearts and give to others.
Thank you so much to our unexpected visitors on Friday night. Merry Christmas!!
