I would like to comment on the article by Viola Pruss "Seeking companionship” in the Oct. 15 Gazette.
First of all it is the adult day program. Daycare is for children. We are not considered ‘disabled.’ The focus of the program is rehabilitation after various medical problems. The other thing we focus on is finding different abilities to replace some of the abilities we may have lost due to various medical incidents.
I have been a client of the day program since 2005. I come from a science background but the day program has allowed me to explore my artistic side. I consider myself differently abled not disabled. Because of a medical problem, I can no longer hike or work at my profession, but I can now swim and volunteer.
Just about everyone at the program has a similar story. I have met some wonderful friend over the years, but the program is more than a gathering place for the disabled. It is a medically supervised rehabilitation program.
