Was gender necessary?

I am wholeheartedly glad to hear that no one was hurt in the accident reported in the St. Albert Gazette, (Wednesday, Nov. 19, pg. 45) involving a police cruiser and a tree along Grandin Road.

I am wholeheartedly glad to hear that no one was hurt in the accident reported in the St. Albert Gazette, (Wednesday, Nov. 19, pg. 45) involving a police cruiser and a tree along Grandin Road. I found it interesting to note that in the photo beside the mini report, that, out of three firefighters – easily identifiable as male, and potentially a fourth male – a member of the RCMP and a female officer, that it was duly noted in the report that the officer in the collision was in fact female and that "road conditions did play a factor in the collision." I wonder if the collision had involved a male member of the RCMP behind the wheel, would his gender also have been stated, so clearly, alongside the photo? Just thinking out loud, for now.
