Regarding the Oct. 5 Gazette article, "Viability key for utility corp": what can go wrong? Correcting a $16-million shortfall to the city’s repair, maintenance, and replacement budget by adding a huge infrastructure liability seems a bit risky to me. I sincerely hope the third-party consultant hired by the city does not succumb to a temptation to deliver the report the city wants and has probably telegraphed.

In my limited personal experience, administration might want to halve the profit the report will suggest is possible and then double the expenses. If the project still makes sense, have someone redo the numbers and look at the assumptions again. Then, maybe go ahead with a pilot project.

Please do not set about proving your own assumptions.
