Uproar over Aurora Place nothing short of abhorrent

The motivation of those opposed to the Aurora Place development is all too clear, and attempts to disguise its true nature behind concerns of lot size and the like are disingenuous at best.

Their unfounded fear of those less fortunate than themselves is the root of this whole mess, and this irrational emotional response has been compounded by what they misconstrue as unfair treatment from our city administration. Any charges the proceedings have been undemocratic are baseless; St. Albert voters recently gave Mayor Nolan Crouse a strong mandate to continue governing our city by voting for him two-to-one over his single-issue, anti-Habitat for Humanity opponent. That is how democracy works.

City council does not owe angry residents veto power issue by issue, and considering the outrageous ignorance some detractors have displayed throughout this issue’s course, St. Albert’s citizens should be very thankful for that. This embarrassing case of misguided community activism does nothing to build a better St. Albert.

Bravo to Arlington Drive residents for becoming politically engaged; shame on them for allowing their petty prejudices to tarnish our city’s reputation.

Patrick Howard, St. Albert
