I couldn't help but chuckle when I read the branch library article in the Gazette today (St. Albert Gazette, April 22) because, unfortunately, it shows how out of touch some citizens are when it comes to all of the hard work that has already gone into the development of the current branch library plan. First of all, to suggest a brand new branch library can be built without any tax increase is simply naive. If the individual interviewed owns her own home, I assume she paid cash for it, rather than borrowing money to purchase it?

Secondly, I hope the individual who stated “... any space constraints at the library could be solved much more efficiently, by using existing space elsewhere within St. Albert Place and the community as a whole” has actually read the numerous space studies that have been completed over the last 20 years that say exactly the opposite.

As a former Library Board member, I have read all of those studies and can assure you that library staff, Library Board members, and even past/present City Council members have thought “outside the box” and assessed all possible alternatives available. This has been a conversation that has been going on for over 20 years ... does he really think that no one has thought through all of the potential options?

Not surprisingly, certain citizens in our community have all of a sudden become interested in the branch library because certain groups are emphasizing the cost over the benefits. I for one have been waiting decades for our city to have more opportunities for space and fantastic service from the St. Albert Public Library. People have had plenty of time to talk and express their opinions. It is time to stop talking and start doing.
