I would like to comment on “Pet owners of Sturgeon area, beware” from Dianne McDonald, in the July 12 Gazette.
It is regretful that some cat owners are irresponsible where their pets are concerned (“that's what cats do”). This is simply a cop-out. Thousands of years ago all animals roamed and did what they did. But then man domesticated animals for the good comfort and safety of their pets, except for some people who let their cats roam free without giving consideration to the good, comfort and safety of their fellow man and neighbours.
I have been told by cat lovers that their animals never leave the house or only stay on their own driveway, however much to my disgust I have kneeled or stepped on their leavings and relegated both birds and squirrels to my garbage because the cats will not let them "do what they do."
I know it is possible to keep your cat inside and only let it outside with a leash, because ours did and lived a long and contented life. I know many others who treat their pets the same way.
Dianne McDonald, if the shooter had spoken to you, which he should have, can you honestly say you would have restrained your cat?
We need a cat bylaw similar to that which we have for dogs, including licensing and numbers control.
