The story “Tax season looking bleak,” (Gazette, April 1) seemed concerned that “several tax credits have been axed and next year several more will cease to exist.” The story seems to ignore the fact that there is only one taxpayer and that is us. With the federal government mounting up debt in the tens of billions of dollars each year, what choice do they have but to either raise taxes or remove certain tax credits.
The 2013/2014 federal debt servicing costs were $29.3 billion. Is this a concern? Yes! Debt servicing costs result in less revenue available for important priorities such as tax relief and spending on public programs like health care, education, and social services.
Should we be concerned? No! We can let our grandchildren worry about debt servicing, which continues to climb. Won't they be impressed?
