Tax increases driving residents away

With 465 houses and condos for sale on MLS and 56 on ComFree, plus all the rest for sale by owner and 53 places to rent in the Gazette in a city of 60,000, that’s a huge number of homes for sale and to rent.

Now put in the tax and utility increases. It gets pretty tempting when on the other side of Campbell just across the tracks, Edmonton is developing homes that are on average 20 to 30 per cent cheaper and the tax savings are at least 1,000 dollars per year.

It seems to me other people do the math just like me. St. Albert at one time had a reputation of a prestigious community. Now it has a reputation as the highest taxed community in the province with no real employment opportunities except for city hall. As a long term home owner in St. Albert, I must now move to more affordable housing in Edmonton with this new tax increase and be the 466th house for sale in St. Albert.

Will the last person in city hall please turn off the light on the way out.

Rob Delaurier, St. Albert
