At around 10:55 p.m. Tuesday (June 13) evening, I took the garbage out. As soon as I opened the back door, I was greeted by the sound of a vehicle travelling at a very high rate of speed. As I rushed to the end of the driveway I was astonished to see a black Chevrolet extended cab truck racing down Gainsborough Avenue. I didn't have a radar gun, I don't know if it was doing 80 or 100 km/hr., but clearly twice as fast as anyone should be driving on a residential street.
I then heard the same truck racing towards Sir Winston Churchill and then roaring off from there. When I can hear the roar of your engine from blocks away there's a problem. I posted to the Grandin Residents Facebook group and soon discovered that this is an ongoing every night issue not just on Gainsborough, but Grosvenor, Glenfell and Levasseur as well, with cars trucks and motorcycles racing at all hours.
Tuesday was a school night so the streets were quiet. But as soon as school is out that will change. People walk their dogs at night. I get it; these roads make a great straightaway. When you hit the top of that hill at Albert Lacombe you can get quite a lift as you crest it. But Gainsborough is not a race track or drag strip. Travelling at that rate of speed, had anyone been in your way, your ability to stop in time would be non-existent.
Grandin is a mature neighborhood, full of original owner seniors, young families and first time buyers. We've already seen a traffic related tragedy on our streets, and we don't need another one. Ever. So please slow down and treat your neighbours with the respect they deserve, before it's too late.
