Read with great interest your editorial on some of the ridiculous speed designations in St. Albert. The one on Churchill is so ridiculous and everyone knows it's a "cash cow." How could the section by Heritage be 60 as well as Levasseur and Churchill 50?
First of all I grew up with the Imperial system, into my teaching career I taught the metric. To this day distance still makes for me an easier understanding when I multiply the km by six and drop the last digit. I then know it'll be a half hour, one hour, two-hour or a three-hour trip. When we changed to km school zones became 30 km from 30 mph, quite a substantial change in speed when you multiply by six and drop the last digit, no?
They have now found a location on Levasseur for their radar under the trees just past Grandin Road. If the 60 km speed will not net them enough money we will soon see a change to 50 km on Levasseur. Wanna bet?
During the fall election campaign when Cam McKay was here I really had a good discussion about the speeds. Yet when I asked him for the criteria for the speeds he did not know but he did fulfil his promise by sending me St. Albert's criteria. Citizens need to challenge them on several roads especially Churchill. It is so far off their criteria it's a laughing matter. If citizens only knew.
You can also get those by contacting Cam as I see according to the Gazette he is not one that usually concurs with the rest of council.
Someone needs to take council to task on them not following their by-law criteria. Hope we can get some action.
