St. Albert is a kind, caring community

A dear friend of mine, Genevieve McNab, has often written to the Gazette to share her vision of St. Albert as a thriving, welcoming home for young and old alike — a home built on compassion and kindness.

A dear friend of mine, Genevieve McNab, has often written to the Gazette to share her vision of St. Albert as a thriving, welcoming home for young and old alike — a home built on compassion and kindness. Although it may take time for the city's legislation to reflect this ethic, I believe her dreams are already being lived out daily through some of its citizens.

When my husband and I found out that we were expecting our first child, we realized our "adults only" apartment in Edmonton would not house us much longer. Both students at the time, we had to scramble to find affordable, family-friendly housing. St. Albert's Liberton Terrace Housing Cooperative was an answer to our prayers. Our new neighbours welcomed us with open arms and many have offered their help and friendship at a time when our new little family needed it most.

To boot, my husband and I do not own a car and rely on public transit to get around. You may have seen me once or twice — I've always got a baby strapped to my front and a backpack on my back. I know some of you, as countless others have, stopped to offer a ride or assistance while my baby and I waited at a snowy bus stop. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

In addition to the many kind neighbours and strangers who look out for us each day, I'd like to extend a special thank you to St. Albert's bus drivers who are a pleasure to ride with and who go out of their way to accommodate a young mom and her little one. To Neil, Tung, Dan, Brent, Steve, Camille, Johnny, Raj, Stephane, Jeff and many others whose names I haven't yet the privilege to learn, thank you for your service and kindness.

Indeed, Gen, there is hope for St. Albert yet.

Erin Fraser, St. Albert
