St. Albert, Alberta cities need waste separation disposal facilities

In concurrence with Jim Rossmann’s letter, ‘Changes to waste pickup will create recycling stations at every house,’ Jan. 5 Gazette and the many concerns regarding waste collection fees ‘imposed’ on the taxpayers of St. Albert, I would like to suggest that all those millions of tax dollars we are required to pay be spent to build a waste separation disposal facility, right here in our city!

If Halifax, Iceland and two other major European cities can collect all garbage and send it unsorted to a waste separation and disposal facility, why can’t we?

The benefits to the environment far outweigh the costs to invest in such a facility. Think about it! We would only need two trucks — one for all household garbage and compostable materials, and a second for recycling — not three.

All garbage and recyclables would be sorted at one plant. The plant generates its own power from the methane gas byproduct. This would be a win-win solution! The technology exists. Check it out!

Every city on Earth should have such a facility. We should demand it and the provincial and municipal governments, as our custodians, should fund it!
