Social justice club urges open hearts

We are the Social Justice Club at Ecole Sir George Simpson School. We are a group of junior high students who meet weekly to discuss how we can affect positive changes in our community, country, and world.

We are the Social Justice Club at Ecole Sir George Simpson School. We are a group of junior high students who meet weekly to discuss how we can affect positive changes in our community, country, and world.

We are writing this letter in response to recent events that have occurred in Red Deer and Portland, aimed at creating fear towards differences. We would like to send a message of peace to let those around us know that as Albertans and as youth, we accept people from around the world from a rich diversity of backgrounds.

We understand that everyone may have a different opinion on what is happening around the world, but we would like to change people’s perspective on what effects diversity will have on our country.

As youth, we believe that diversity is not only beneficial, but necessary. It brings us together and solidifies our Canadian identity. It is fundamental for our personal growth towards full acceptance of our own selves. We need to understand others in order to comprehend our own identity and journey. Our worldview is broadened and our education increases when we are fortunate enough to meet people with a different way of life. Diversity is a Canadian value and has been since the union of our nation 150 years ago. Many of our families in this community have roots outside of the original Treaty 6 land.

We renounce these acts of fear and urge our fellow Canadians to go forward with hope, curiosity, and an open heart.
