In my ongoing research into questionable St. Albert photo radar locations I am pleased to report that most locations are fair and adequately marked although I have several locations yet to visit. I have broken the locations down into three categories:
Completely unnecessary and unfair (these are rare but include Forest Drive playground in the winter.)
Speed limit somewhat low considering the nature of the road (includes Villeneuve Road and Poirier Avenue.)
Signs inadequate or improperly placed to give motorists fair advantage.
This week I located the most glaring example of improperly placed signs warning of photo enforcement. It involves the heavily enforced Sir Winston Churchill Avenue at Woodlands Road (which becomes Park Avenue upon crossing Winston Churchill). As one approaches Winston Churchill on Woodlands Road a school zone photo radar sign is quite visible although there is no school at that location. Upon turning right or left from this residential feeder road onto the major Winston Churchill thoroughfare, there are no school zone signs but automated enforcement and live enforcement by RCMP and peace officers is continuous. The problem is identical when turning onto Winston Churchill from Park Avenue. The sign is on Park Avenue but the enforcement takes place on Sir Winston Churchill. Where is the connection between the side-street signs and the enforcement on the main thoroughfare.
I, and the citizens of St. Albert, would love an explanation supporting the rationale for that kind of sign placement at this location or other locations I have not yet located
