School shines during Remembrance Day event

I want to thank the students and staff who planned the Thursday Nov. 10 Remembrance Day service at Sir Alexander Mackenzie School (SAM) and I wanted to share how proud I am of the students, staff and school.

The students were truly respectful and I got the feeling they really knew why they were there. I realize it takes prior coaching from adults for that many children in one gym to be as attentive as those students were and I appreciate those efforts. It was great to see students from St. Albert Outreach School attend the service and hear a poem from one of those students. The whole service, including the music, the student masters of ceremony, and the speaker from the military was so very well done. The moment that took my breath away was when one of the student MCs shared that more than 158 Canadian military personnel have been killed in the Afghanistan War, and asked what that looked like — 158 students stood at that moment.

It reminds us all that each and every one of those soldiers, and soldiers from wars past, were someone’s child. As a parent, that makes my heart ache for peace.

Again, kudos to SAM school.
